Hey! If you all know me like I know you do, you know that I am inspired by Hip Hop just as much as fashion. I am also down to support other young people living their dreams. Today, I want to shine the spotlight on a mixtape that is tickling my fancy at the moment. "Conscious Thought" is an effortless collaboration with rapper Quent and singer J. Spells. I love the feel good nature of the mixtape. It is a mixtape you want to play if you are getting together with your friends for a kickback, riding through the town, or just needing some alone time to wind down. HOW TO CLEAN YOUR FLAT IRON

Hello all! I am literally in the middle of flat ironing my hair. The last time my hair was flat ironed, my mom did it. She felt as though because I am transitioning to natural hair that the heat of my flat iron needed to be on 25 even though I normally do it with wonderful results on 18. The result was a very sticky flat iron. You know, when the ceramic plates feel as though they have a sticky film on them but it is really the protein of your melted hair. If left untreated, it will begin build up on your flat iron and have a yellowish brown color. I had to get the melt off of my flat iron and I told my grandmother my plight. She simply said, "Wipe it off with salt water." It seemed too simple to me but I was willing to try.

I heated up a tablespoon of salt with 1/4 cup of water in a mug and microwaved it for one minute. I dipped a paper towel in the water and scrubbed the ceramic plates of the flat iron. Then with a dry paper towel, I wiped them dry. I repeated the dip-n-wipe steps until the ceramic plates were smooth, not sticky, to the touch.

My flat iron feels like new. I am so glad I have a granny who knows everything : ) I even looked it up online to make sure I was giving you all the right information. Granny is scientifically proven. And for a final tidbit, I use a BaByLiss Pro Ceramix Extreme. The one most like mines on the website is the Straightening Iron 25 mm. I got my flat iron from TJMaxx. So that's all folks. My 2012 Golden Globes favorite red carpet looks were...

Sofia Vergara in Vera Wang. She just looks like a bombshell beauty. She is making the navy blue live and her curves gives the entire look electricity.

Viola Davis in Emilio Pucci. Her hair and makeup was beautiful. The dress was made to lay on her glowing skin.

Emma Stone in Lanvin. I love the red hair on her best I, must say. The dress she wore was edgy and young, but still very chic and effortless.

Mark Wahlburg in Armani. This man is sexy and rugged. He cleans up very well. The suit and matching bow tie didn't wear him; he made tuxedos look cool and casual.

Tilda Swinton. I thought she looked fashion forward and chic. With her icy features, the light blue shimmers on her skin. I feel like that she adapted to the red carpet while still staying true to herself.

Elle Macpherson in Zac Posen. She looks like an angel.That was the only dress on the red carpet I wanted to see in person. She did no wrong in this gown.

Almost Maybes: I liked it but something was off...

Paula Patton in Monique Lhullier. I love her, the dress is beautiful, and the color is nice. I was just hoping she would give us something more unexpected than an interesting choice in color.

Mila Kunis in Christian Dior. I love the dress and the girl wearing it. Her dark hair made her look very gothic glam. However, I feel like she shouldn't have played it safe with black and picked a vibrant color for the gown. She has the ability to wear and get away with any color she wants.

Reese Witherspoon in Zac Posen. I think she looks happy and beautiful but the bold, diva color of her dress does not coincide with her beachy hair. She would have looked better wearing the color Paula Patton wore.

Octavia Spencer in Tadashi Shoji. She looks beautiful. I am glad she won the Globe. However, I wish she would've have picked a livelier color that would have made her smile on the red carpet.

Jessica Alba in Gucci. She looks beautiful, like a glowing mommy. I am just tired of the same silhouette on her and tired of the same color.

Salma Hayek in Gucci. I love her because she always brings the sexy to the red carpet. I know she is getting older but the two tone dress is not cute, even if its Gucci!

I don't know if they do it purposely, if they get paid for every product mentioned in their songs, or if it is just extra fun for them to brag about lavish things but some of music biggest stars are singing and rapping about about some fancy fashions. Here are a few I picked up on. Let me know if you know of any other songs that "musically endorse" any fashion brands because I know there are plenty.

In her song "Cheers (Drink To That)", Rihanna got her Ray-Ban's on and she feeling hella cool tonight. I don't need a drink to see that Ray-Ban carries a very chic collection of sunglasses.

In Jay-Z's new song "Glory" dedicated to his new born daughter, he mentions that Blue Ivy Carter will be 2 years old shopping on Savile Row, a shopping street in Central London famous for men's tailoring.

Nicki Minaj likes them boys in the Polos, Ralph Lauren that is, according to her smash hit "Super Bass." I must admit, I do too. Check the fine model below!

And Beyonce takes it a step further and promises to "Upgrade U" and have her man rocking Purple Label, Ralph Lauren's luxury line for men. I don't think Jay-Z needs any swag upgrades but it was a nice gesture.

I am pretty sure Trina is referring to Christian Louboutin shoes in her song "Long Heels, Red Bottoms." And I don't blame her. I can't wait until I purchase my first pair.

In a classic Wale song, he rhymes about the DMV, the region where he is from. At the time, everyone wanted North Face jackets and "Nike Boots." I know many people who embody this style and it wasn't just a trend for them but a way of life.

Uncle Kanye declares that he is the "Hermes of Verses" in his song with Jay-Z, "Otis." Hermes is the French fashion house that was established in 1837 and still a major force in the luxury goods market and in the fashion industry. Most girls love the Birkin. I love the scarves.

WHAT'S THAT JACKET, MARGIELA?

You can count on crazy Uncle Kanye to school you on fashion while spitting one of his hottest bars (in my opinion) on one of the "cray" songs ever, Niggas In Paris. I had to figure out for myself: What is Margiela? I found out that Martin Margiela is a Belgian fashion designer who studied at renowned Antwerp's Royal Academy of Fine Arts. I went to his website and I was slightly taken aback because it was very plain and Windows 95ish. However, I was intrigued. And what I uncovered is much greater than any fancy pixels. His designs speak louder than words. He definitely creates for men and women who have a specific style. Even though it is not entirely my bread and butter, I think it is wonderful that some of the pieces even put a sparkle in my eye. Here are my favorite looks from Maison Martin Margiela.

GOING NATURAL 1

Hello! Its a new year and new things are happening in my life. One of those new things for me is transitioning from relaxed hair to natural hair and really sticking to it this time. Hopefully, journaling this time (a lovely idea from many people but nurtured by Newly Natural) will make it easier and more fun! I have been attempting to transition for about three years but I never had enough confidence and strength to stick to my guns. The longest I went without a relaxer was six months and it felt like the longest time ever. Mostly because I didn't know much about natural hair. So I did go back to the creamy crack but along the way I learned so much about natural products and practices. I even began to use some of them. My RELAXED hair began to act so much better, look better, and I could go longer without relaxers. I told myself "if this is going natural, I think I can handle it this time." So I will began to do this series on the blog just to keep up with what I have been doing and hopefully I can be an inspiration for someone else.

My last relaxer was in August 2011. I know some naturals are going to give me the stink eye with this next line but I have found it easier in the first four months to transition with straightening. Hear me out!!! When I tried rod sets, braid outs, and other low heat options the first time around, I couldn't deal with the textures because I had more straight hair than natural hair. While the practices were good for natural hair, they made my relaxed hair look retarded. So this is my current regimen. It takes me anywhere from a minimum of four hours to two days (exaggerated lol).

1. I comb my hair out with a wide tooth comb that I also use for wrapping and shampooing my hair. Then I deep condition my dry, not shampooed, hair. I drench it with the concoction of the day. I have named it such because the following products may or may not be in it at the moment but have all been apart of the party at one time or another, in no particular order.

Melted shea butter
Africa's Best Ultimate Herbal Oil (Less than $2 dollars at Wal-Mart)
Burt's Bees More Moisture Raspberry & Brazil Nut Conditioner (Currently on sale for $6 on the company's website)
Suave Professionals Humectant Moisture Conditioner (In the summer and spring mostly)
Kizure Thermal Prep Heat Protection Level 2 Heat Shields Blow Styling with Sunscreen Silk Protein Plus (From my mom's hair care pantry/if this stuff runs out and it is no longer in production I am up the creek)
Queen Helene Cholesterol Hot Oil Treatment (DIDO)
Aphogee ProVitamin Leave-In Conditioner
Harris Teeter Naturals Organic Wildflower Honey (haven't tried yet but I heard it's the bomb)

I then put on a conditioning cap (8 pack of "shower caps" from Dollar Tree for $1). I leave it on for as long as I can. My motto for deep conditioning is "the longer the better."

2. I wash my hair two to three times with either Burt's Bees More Moisture Raspberry & Brazil Nut Shampoo or Shea Moisture Organic Raw Shea Butter Moisture Retention Shampoo. These shampoos are great if you are like me and you need suds to know your hair clean. I tried using regular shampoo after using these with no sulfates and you will just love your hair so much more if you use shampoo with no sulfates. As I mentioned earlier, I continuously comb my hair during shampooing with wide tooth comb because my natural roots get tangled in the straight ends and cause havoc if I don't. Then I condition and do one last good comb through with just Burt's Bees More Moisture Conditioner. Of course, rinse. But if a little bit of conditioner is left in your hair, don't sweat it.

3. I spray my slightly towel dried hair with a mixture of Africa's Best Oil, Aphogee Leave-In, and Kizure Heat Protect. You can be liberal with the first two and I try to be modest with the last even though I have never had problems with drying and overcoating of the hair follicles. I then blow dry my hair. My blow dryer has a comb attachment which I use along with my very trusty wide tooth comb interchangeably. I don't aim for completely dry hair because my roots just won't allow it and I refuse to spend more than 45 minutes blow drying. I may blow dry longer and rub in some Africa's Best if I don't have time to set aside for flat ironing. I just wear my hair blown out for a day or two (my favorite time to use cute scarves and headbands to pull hair back from my face).

4. I spray my dry hair and scalp with a little bit Africa's Best Oil and massage it through (don't over do it/hair shouldn't feel wet or greasy). I section and start in the back. I flat iron very small sections slightly wider than the diameter of a quarter. I comb the tiny section through with a smaller tooth comb (I don't do rat tail combs but it will work just fine) and brush it from the root to tip with a boar bristle brush. I use medium high heat on my hair because it is hot enough to straighten but not too hot to where it is damaging. Do what's right for your texture because I have friends who need medium low heat whereas my roots would laugh at the flat iron. It takes me two to three hours to flat iron my entire head.

5. To maintain, I wrap my hair at night with wooden paddle wrap brush, wide tooth comb and bobby pins when needed. I protect my hair with a men's doorag worn backwards because you get full head coverage, it is adjustable, and it is secure all night. Just know your hair won't just "go" as if it is relaxed. My roots have a mind of their own so wrapping my hair is different every night. I do not flat iron or blow dry in between; my hair has been through enough! If it begins to not lay just right, I experiment with different hairstyles that camouflage my edges and "kitchen." I use my African's Best Oil and boar bristle brush to aid in this. As my hair grows I want to try Eco Styler Gel with Argan Oil or shea butter and honey melted together. I keep my ends trimmed and hair moisturized. I keep my hair styled for about two or three weeks or until dirty. It is then time to repeat the process : (

I will continue to do this until it doesn't work anymore. It is very time consuming but it does my hair good. I like to get blow outs and just pay someone to deal with my hair but I don't like that they use products I am not used to, especially shampoos with sulfates in them. I am thinking about transitioning with sew-ins when my hair becomes a fro with spaghetti on top. So I will keep you all posted on my progress.

Hello Everyone!!! I am sorry for the neglect but with finals and moving, I have just been extremely busy. And drum roll please for my major announcement... I am a graduate of Shaw University!!! I don't feel much different. I just feel like I am old mostly and like there is an expiration date on my dreams. That feeling on top of feeling like no one really understands my dreams has all made me very lethargic. I am supposed to be moving to Philadelphia in three days and I am not even packed.

I just don't want to fail. Fashion is the only thing I have been passionate about in a long time. It just happens to be the most risky route I could possibly take as a mathematics major with no fashion experience.

My brother asked me why won't I stay in Winston-Salem. It sounds very tempting. I know the city, I know where I could work, I could get my own place because the cost of living is low, and I know I will always be comfortable and content. However, I can't take the easy way out. I have to live my dreams and see how far I can get so that I won't have any regrets. No, I won't be getting paid much money and I will not be able to have my own place. I will be a country girl commuting between two big cities. But a moment of being uncomfortable is worth a lifetime of living my dreams. Everyone can't say that they live the life they dreamed they would. I want to be able to say it.

So I said all that to say, cast out fear. I graduated college even though three and a half years ago I was too terrified to even to apply to schools. I have already conquered one fear and its the perfect time to tackle them all. The same goes for you. Anything you are just afraid to try or do, I am here to encourage you to just do it. Especially if you feel stagnant, confused, and broken because you have nothing to lose and everything to gain.We are our own worst enemy sometimes but we have to let go of fear and become our own heroes. My superhero name is The Graduate ;)

I know that I have a major issue maintaining healthy relationships with friends, family, and men. And most times, I sabotage those relationships by expecting too much too soon and by making assumptions based on past relationships. I think the hardest thing I had to learn was that everyone is not meant to be in your life or they may have just came into your life to teach you a lesson. By constantly learning these "lessons," I've began to ingrain in my mind that I don't want to ever go through what I have gone through before. So I don't give people a chance, I cut people's spans in my life short, and I assume the task of getting over another hurt.

I don't want to live like this anymore. As I approach adulthood, I accept responsibility for all of my actions, all of the mistakes I have made, and I don't mind admitting my wrong and giving those apologies. I just feel like I don't know how to grow with someone. I am not sure if I will ever really be able to trust again. I hate that I can't let go enough of the past to let some people who I really miss have a chance to come back in.

I just sometimes feel I have no more love left, no more patience, and no more time. I love really hard and I like to be there for those I care about. So when they hurt me, I feel like a piece of me was taken away. When I hurt them, or it is my fault, or they say it is my fault, I die a little inside. We all want someone to like and accept us as we are. And someone that doesn't know themselves or doesn't have a strong relationship with a higher power, dealing with people will get you every time. You want the impossible: You want imperfect people to be perfect.

I say all of this to say, I am not ready yet. I thought I was ready to move on, build relationships, start fresh, and keep trying to love past the pain. While trying to do this, I have been masking the pain. I haven't really addressed my real issues with myself and the past. I need to face my fears of trusting and loving and learn how to do that God's way. I have to accept a failed attempt as motivation to do better next time rather than an opportunity to run and hide. I made the first step of forgiveness but now I have to make the step of realization. I want to change my life. I want to love again.

WHO WILL BE THE NEW VAL ON SINGLE LADIES?

As a fan, I feel as though I have a right to secure the future of my favorite show, Single Ladies. After a great season that left us on the edge of our seats and wanting more, I wish they would just tell Stacey Dash the right amount so that she can come back. I really hate to see her leave the show because it won't be the same. But with the rumors about her being let go, I don't know if that is going to happen. So I figured, let's find a replacement; we should not have to suffer! And how can the show go on without Val's character?!... It can't, I won't watch. So here are my Top 5 picks.

5. Reagan Gomez. I love her and I just want to see her back on TV. Sex appeal for days so she doesn't have to worry about that part. Only thing is she is noticeably younger than the character. She looks my age... but so did Stacey Dash. Regardless, I think she could hold her own.

4. Golden Brooks. We all loved her on Girlfriends. I think she could really do the role of Val justice. Plus her baby daddy already plays on the show, ride to work together. I'm just saying.

3. Lark Voorhies. Yes the girl from Saved By The Bell! I think she could really fill the role of Val and it would be believable and an easier transition for the fans. Especially since her and Stacey Dash both have that petite, sassy look. And it would be great to see her back on television.

2. Tamera Mowry. Nothing would make me happier than having my favorite twins on my two favorite TV Shows. I think it would really be a change for Tamera but a great one. I would love to see her do her thing again. Only issue is she may be a few years younger than Val's character but she can pull it off. It would definitely keep the show buzzing.

1. Nia Long. When you think fly, ageless, black beauty, you think Nia Long. She would definitely keep the fan base up. However, has her baby bump popped yet? Maybe they'll wait for her.

I am up extra early for no reason at all. I went out of my room and into the hall of my dormitory to find last year's yearbook laying on the coach. I pulled up a seat and I began to flip through the pages. I just saw how much fun everyone around me had all year long. I was only in two pictures. I don't remember having that much fun. I remember working hard to be shot down, struggling through my classes, and caring about people who really didn't care about me. High school was the same way. I tried to enjoy myself but work always took precedence. Losing friends always put the ultimate damper on my parade.

Don't feel sorry for me; these are the choices I made. I just regret letting life fly by. I am 21 and my happy memories are minimal. I was a blessed child but some things in my past kept me depressed and anxious for years. It took me 21 years to truly love myself and to believe in myself.

This is my LAST semester of college. If there was never a better time to truly live my life, the time is now. If life is going to fly by me, I want to have the courage to hop on it's back and catch a ride. Every dream I ever had I am going to pursue. My bucket list will began to be checked off. I won't let finances hold me back. I won't let people's opinions affect my decisions. I won't compare my path to other people's lives; Jesus gave me these pink and gold plated Louboutin sneakers for a reason.

I am really beginning to face some tough decisions. I am conflicted over the life I want, the life I have, and the current path I am on. I am a Mathematics major, Accounting minor from Shaw University. I learned so much in my studies, especially how much I don't want to pursue those fields in my career. This blog has opened my mind, my eyes, and my world to the fashion industry. And surprisingly, not only do I love the creativity and freedom of the Fashion World, I respect the structure of the business. Although this structure makes it hard for a young Black girl like me with no money and no connections, it intertwines so cohesively with what I want to do with my life. I have been researching graduate fashion management programs and possible cities I would like to live and work in. However, every time I express my dreams and goals to someone who could give me that big break, they don't see what I see. They don't believe that I can have the fashion talent desired to excel. They want a fashion student, which is understandable. But just because I didn't study it in school doesn't mean I don't have a fiery passion for it in my soul.

I realized there our a few things I'm going to have to do. I am going to have to work on my outer appearance. I am a pretty girl :) but I am not stick thin. Since middle school, I knew I couldn't afford to stay up with the trends so I just had my own laid back style that kept me looking presentable. It continued into my college years, a time I wanted to evolve my style but still didn't have the means to. The fashion industry is image driven and I must look the part every moment of my life. If the uniform is heels, nice handbags, and stylish clothing, I am ready to oblige. However, I am beginning to see that my budget can't even sustain a splurge on cheap clothing. I am going to try thrifting but that has become an overpriced practice too. Why pay fifty dollars for an old shirt when I can get a new one for $25? I never thought my hardest project would be styling myself but it is a challenge I will accept.

I also realized that I am going to have to beg, plead, write letters, and crawl on my knees to get some fashion experience. I am going to have to work a job next semester but I really want to intern as well. With 18 final credit hours in the mix, I really just want God to make the impossible possible. I am researching boutiques and designers in the Raleigh area and will be writing letters and emails next week.

Lastly, I realized I can't give up. I can't let people discourage me. I have to be able to accept criticism and to evolve beyond the critique. I have to believe whole-heartedly that if I prayed and cried to God about this thing and I believe that he is guiding me on the right path, I can't detour from that no matter what happens. I am working on my spiritual life, my forgiveness, and my communication skills. I am just trying to be a better, more self-assured Elisa.

With every problem I just listed, I provided a solution. Another skill I am trying to master: Solving my own problems. As a little girl, I always had a solution. Most times a style solution. I absolutely adored dressing myself, my mom, my cousins, and my grandma. My grandma instilled style into my heart at a young age. She would say "If you look good, you feel good. And when you feel good, you can do anything." And just with those words, I believed I was unstoppable. Now as a grown up, I am fighting to get that crazy, childlike faith back.

I have the passion. I have the drive. I am hungry. I believe it will all work out. I have so much work ahead of me. Life as I know it is not an option anymore. There is no reason I can't live my dreams and be happy with the life and career I chose and shaped for myself. I have been grinding the whole time. I guess I wrote this because I know the biggest hustle of my life starts now.

So many things I want to say tonight. So I am going to number my points so I won't get lost in my words ;)
1. First, please keep it locked on http://elisakiswana.blogspot.com. I am trying to do something special for my 100th blog post. It really means the world to me. It is more than an outlet of my profound expression, it's a gateway to my heart, my passions. Thank you Everyone who has been rocking with me since day one.

2. I have been going through my old posts for inspiration, to see how I can improve, and to pick my favorites. I realized that people liked my deep, profound posts more than anything else. I have been focusing solely on fashion and music lately and I have been pressed for time. It shows and you guys just aren't having it. But I am going to try to give an equal mix of both. I don't mind being a lifestyle blogger who specializes in style.

3. With television networks trying to move from reality back to sitcoms, many shows are hit and miss. But one show I was glad to see premiere and I will continue to stand by is Love That Girl featuring Tatyana Ali. It just feels good. The acting isn't forced or bad. You can tell Martin Lawrence is involved with the show. It is really fun and any single girl who feels like she is constantly at a start over/time to change point in her life, this is the show for you. I don't have TVOne because I am in the dorm and they give us whatever channels they want to give us :/. However, I got to see an episode online. It was funny, dramatic, and it just touched my heart.

4. Last, but most profound, I have been having a really hard time trying to get over a man who is probably not even thinking about me as I type and maybe never will. He did at one point, when it's convenient, or when he felt he had to keep me around while he made up his mind about what he wanted. All my friends say let it go Lisa, you got too much going on to deal with that anyway, you are worth more, he doesn't deserve you. TRUST ME, I know this. But this episode made me realize why I just can't let go mentally even though in every other way he is out of my life. We all need CLOSURE. If something doesn't end in a way where you at least understand how it all got to that point, you will never understand how to move past it. I need closure and a distinct reason why he feels I was not the one when in my mind I felt like I was the perfect one for him. When I figure out how to close this chapter after three years, I will definitely tell the story. Maybe my unsolved mystery can be someone else's revelation.

My girl Mara had rough day the other day. In a nutshell, she was just trying to be herself and do the right thing but it was misinterpreted. She felt embarrassed when she was called out about it and said it bruised her ego. Well I know exactly how you feel because it happens to me all the time. Sometimes it just takes a little motivation to keep moving forward. Even when it feels like everything has fallen all around you and nobody really cares, keep moving forward. Even though you know you are going to have to fall ten times before you stand, keep moving forward. Even when you feel as though there is no solution, keep moving forward. Even when all hope is gone and all faith is lost keep moving forward. For a moment, I stopped believing in in myself. I stopped caring. I let people affect my mood and attitude. I decided I should give up because I just was too afraid of the outcome. But then my Grandma said "Don't Quit Elisa." And I didn't; I just kept moving forward.

Check the shoes on the models' feet, super cute and styled to the T. If Marylin Monroe was in her prime today, she would absolutely adore these pieces. I like the line because it is demure enough to wear off the runway but it has the same whimsy, dramatics, sparkle, and shine that a Heatherette line would have minus the unwearable/fashion art quality. And this time I randomly picked a designer I knew nothing about and I found the upcoming Spring 2011 collection for Altuzarra. LIL KIM SPEAKS ABOUT BEEF

Now, I love Nicki. But I have always loved Lil Kim, I grew up listening to her. The effect that Nicki Minaj has now is the effect that Lil Kim had then, and really still has on that generation. Are there similarities? Sure. However, I can tell the differences and I honor it in both of them. The beef between them: I think it's stupid and I wish it would end. In the next video, Lil Kim makes some really good points. However, I am the type of person where if you know someone is wrong and they have it coming, let God get them. It's just unfortunate for Kim because Nicki and Diddy (also mentioned in the interview below) are racking in the dough with their new albums at the top of the charts. Lil Kim may be justified in how she feels, but it's making her look like a hater. I just want her to make no more statements, get in the studio and make the hottest album, build the Queen Bee empire and get more artists out there, more female MCs who respect what you have done, and will really listen to her guidance. Because she seems like she is wise and could help someone from making the same mistakes she made. I really understand Kim more after this interview. It's like everyone is on Nicki's side, all the men rather. And none of the other female rappers are speaking out. I really love this video. I am jealous though. I am supposed to marry Drake and this isn't making my plans any easier ;). But it's OK; I just have to work past it and focus on Rihanna's fashion. I love how she is styled in this video. Usually that "Red Wig" (it has it's own entity now) kills me softly but it somehow works in this video. With the views I have been receiving on my blog, I have to make sure everyone gets an accurate account of who I am. Yes I love fashion, but sometimes I feel like a Political Activist. My Honors College at Shaw University and the Alpha Rho Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. just hosted Den of Deliberation, an open forum for intelligent conversation and debate about issues in today's world. This time we based our discussion around "A War For Your Soul" a great movie by filmmaker Reggie Bullock. All I can say is, if you have a soul, watch it.
